Introduction
I believe that every piece of wood has a soul and a story to be told. The wood has a spiritual connection with nature and with me. Using the years of experience in woodworking and artistry, I pour my heart into each peice. One never knows exactly what beauty we will find in each tree.
Sourcing
The wood is locally sourced from fallen or horticulturally managed trees in New England. It often comes from my property or the neighborhood. Sometimes a family has a meaningful or special tree that has fallen. Once in a while I may use a peice of exoctic wood for artistic reasons.
Trees that are broken or distressed often produce the most beautiful wood. The ones that have had the hardest life have the most beauty.
Process
I first saw trees into logs, then the logs into slabs. The slabs are carved into a rough form and kiln dried from 30+% water to less than 10% water content. When dry they are carved a second time into the final form. Finally, I sand and finish the bowl with any or all of the following: carving, burning, painting, oiling, waxing. This process spans a year or two for each bowl.
Food safe
All my work is food safe unless otherwise specified not so. I do this because it is rewarding to make art that people can use every day. If the wood requires CA or Epoxy then it is not food safe and would be used for artful display only.
Studio
All work is done in my studio. It is a magical place where traditional techniques meet playful creativity, resulting in craftsmanship that captures the essence of nature and our connections with the trees. Join us in celebrating the wonderful world of the trees!
